Intention

Bismillahirahmanirraheem. In the name of ALLAH, the extremely merciful, the ever merciful. Intention is one of the main characteristics that a believer must have. One well known hadith comes from the Bukhari.

Narrated ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab:I heard Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) saying, “The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for worldly benefits or for a woman to marry, his emigration was for what he emigrated for.”

This is the very first hadith in the book. Most of us doesn’t pay attention to the things we do daily. Every thing we do, we must intend to do it for the sake of GOD. We must remember to always evaluate what we just did. Whatever we do. Eating, drinking, sleeping, going to the masjid, reciting, speaking, working and so on. Did we just eat for us, for our desire or did we eat for the sake of GOD, so that we give the body GOD has entrusted with, the strength the it needs? We have to think about it.

Same goes for all the daily activities we do. It’s all about paying attention and being mindful of what you do. It needs a lot of practice but if you try hard and try it for the sake of GOD, it will be successful. In one of the hadith qudsi, ALLAH the almighty says…

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:Allah the Almighty said: I am as My servant thinks I am (1). I am with him when he makes mention of Me. If he makes mention of Me to himself, I make mention of him to Myself; and if he makes mention of Me in an assembly, I make mention of him in an assembly better than it. And if he draws near to Me an arm’s length, I draw near to him a cubit, and if he draws near to Me a cubit, I draw near to him a fathom. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed. (1) Another possible rendering of the Arabic is: “I am as My servant expects Me to be”. The meaning is that forgiveness and acceptance of repentance by the Almighty is subject to His servant truly believing that He is forgiving and merciful. However, not to accompany such belief with right action would be to mock the Almighty. It was related by al-Buhkari (also by Muslim, at-Tirmidhi and Ibn-Majah).

Let’s be mindful. Start with small things such as washing our faces when we wake up or putting on clothes. Let’s do it for the sake of GOD and seek his pleasure so that he will love you. May ALLAH give us ability to do all things for HIS sake. Ameen.
